Gallien: Gallien was a very sympathetic person. He was very concerned about McCandless so he offered to buy him some decent gear for his adventure since he noticed that McCandless barely had anything with him. Gallien tried to help McCandless as much as he can by lending him a pair of his old boots and by also giving McCandless the lunch his wife had prepared for him. He also tried to dissuade McCandless from going on with this trip. The relationship McCandless had with Gallien was he was the last person to see McCandless alive and the last person to help him.
Wayne Westerberg: Of all the people McCandless has met on his adventure, he had the closest relationship with Wayne Westerberg. Westerberg was very considerate and kind to McCandless. When they first met, Westerberg had offered McCandless a job at the grain elevator if he ever decided to come back in town and he had also let McCandless stay with him for three days. When McCandless came back three weeks later, Westerberg gave me a job, as he said, rented him a cheap room in one of the houses he owned and became very close with McCandless. After leaving Carthage for the last time, McCandless would always send him postcards whenever he had the chance to.
Walt McCandless: Walt was Chris’s father. Chris didn’t really have a good relationship with his father ever since he had found out about what happened with Walt and his first wife. He was very distant with his parents after that whole situation. Walt was a very intelligent person. He also had an interest in traveling and being outdoors just like his son. Additionally, Walt was a very talented musician. He enjoyed playing the guitar, piano and French horn. Chris had inherited these three things from his father.
Billie McCandless: Billie was Chris’s mother. Along with his father, he didn’t have a strong relationship with his mother either. This was also because of the situation that happened with Walt and his first wife. Billie, however, cared a lot about Chris. When he was gone, she worried about him all the time.
Carine Westerberg: Carine was Chris’s only sister. She was a talented and confident young girl. She had a close relationship with Chris. They trusted each other so much and they could talk about anything. Chris would always come to her to talk about how he felt about anything, including his parents. Carine would always be there to listen to him.
Jan Burres: Jan and her boyfriend, Bob, saw him crouching in the bushes off the side of the road, picking some berries. She claims that Chris looked pretty pitiful so she asked him if he wanted a ride somewhere. She was a very considerate and nice person and decided to feed Chris. After they got to know each other a bit more, Jan talked to Bob about helping Chris out by teaching him things. She claimed that she also had a son about the same age as Chris and that idea came to mind. She was the woman that Chris would continuously flirt and clown with. After Chris left, he continued to send Bob and Jan postcards every month or two for the next two years.
Bob: Bob was Jan Burres boyfriend. He was a self-styled survialist. He and Jan both helped Chris out during his week-long visit. He would do calisthenics with Chris so that Chris would get in shape for his "great Alaskan odyssey."
Charlie: Charlie was the old man that Chris met when he was shaving in a restroom. Chris thought of him as some sort of lunatic and he was difficult to get along with at times. However, he offered Chris a place to sleep at, which was his old trailer. Charlie allowed Chris to stay there for free.
Tracy: Tracy was the seventeen-year-old who fell in love Chris McCandless during his week-long visit. She was really attracted to Chris and hung around him so much. Tracy was one of the people he became friends with, along with Jan Burres, as he stayed in Niland.
Ronald A. Franz: Out of all the people that Chris have met on his journey, Franz was the one who was most hurt when he heard the news about Chris's death. Franz was an eighty-year-old leather-worker and a Christian. On New Year's Eve 1957, he lost his wife and only child in a car accident. After that, he began drinking a lot. When Chris and Franz had first met, Franz had given him a ride to his camp, past Oh-My-God Hot Springs. For the next few weeks, Chris and Franz spent a lot of time together. During that period of time, Chris began lecturing the old man about his sedentary existence. When he saw Chris again, Franz took Chris out to eat at Sizzler. After that, he asked Chris if he would let him adopt him. He knew his family will be finished since he was the only child in his family and also since he had lost his only child. He thought Chris would be the boy to adopt, especially since he grew very fond of him. Chris, however, only left him with one answer which was "we'll talk about this when I get back from Alaska." Franz really loved Chris. His world was never the same again since the death of his wife and only child, until he met Chris.
Gail Borah: Gail was the woman Chris had met through Westerberg when he had came back to Carthage. She became very close to Chris after a while. Chris enjoyed her cooking, from her observations, Chris was a big eater. Chris was able to open up to her like he did with Westerberg.
Mary Westerberg: Mary was Wanye's mother. She was very fascinated by Chris when they first met. She enjoyed how they shared a few things in common, especially about books.
Gaylord Stuckey: Gaylord was a 63 year old, bald and cheerful man. He was one of the men who gave Chris a ride to his destinations. He really enjoyed Chris and how his personality was. When they first met, he took him to Fairbanks and took him to the grocery store, where he bought a big bag of rice. Before they parted onto their separate ways, Stuckey gave Chris his credit card number and pleaded him to them.
